Some call them the godfather of melodic death metal, many bands have been influenced by At The Gates like melodic black metallers and metalcore bands. Some bands even rip off At the Gates riffs and get famous with them.
At The Gates' first album, The Red In The Sky Is Ours is based on melodic guitar riffs and a raw sound. This album contains the fan favourite song Kingdom Gone and it is important for metal fans to see the progression of the band and listen to an album which kickstarted Melodic Death Metal.
Their second album has still a raw sound but vocals are better and there are really good songs like The Burning Darkness. The songs are more melodic.
Their third album, Terminal Spirit Disease has the real change in the bands career. It has a better sound quality, catchier songs, more technical riffs and all time favourites like Terminal Spirit Disease, The Beautiful Wound, Forever Blind. With this album the band earned their godlike status among melodeath fans.
Then comes their last album, Slaughter Of The Soul. It continues the legend of Terminal Spirit Disease and contains remarkable tracks like Cold, Suicide Nation, Nausea (which inspired the turkish melodeath band which has the same name), Blinded By Fear.
For starters i recommend Terminal Spirit Disease, which shows the start of the peek of bands career and then their masterpiece Slaughter of The Soul. Then you should probably check the bands roots and see where does all this come from and check out their first two albums.
